About the event

Greeneville and Greene County will celebrate the 250th Anniversary of our country in front of the Greene County Courthouse.

Tennesseans will join communities across the United States in reading the Declaration of Independence aloud together at 6 pm EDT on July 8. The initiative, called Sharing the Spirit of America, was developed by the Hawaii America 250 Commission. The Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will be leading this initiative in our state, so check their website for updates in 2026.

Anybody can join in, so start thinking about how to involve local schools, religious communities, civic organizations, and families! Visit this link for the full text of the Declaration and start times for your time zone. When Tennesseans participate, please take pictures of your group and post to social media, tag @tennessee250 on Instagram and Facebook, and use the hashtags #SharingTheSpiritOfAmerica, #TennesseeAmerica250, and #America250

Since the Greene County Heritage Trust was established as a local nonprofit 501(c)3 organization in 1973,  its primary mission has been to help protect, preserve, and/or restore Greeneville and Greene County structures, sites, and artifacts that are part of our countywide community’s rich historic and cultural legacy. In addition, working with other similar groups, the Trust seeks to increase public awareness of that legacy, and build respect and appreciation for it.
